About artist: I am a visual artist born in Leicester, UK, living and working in Dublin. I completed my Fine Art degree, including my Masters, at IADT and completed a PhD at NCAD. I work with a variety of materials and mixed media including acrylic, oil and pastel, charcoal and print – the choice is determined by the image I am working on and my emotional response to it. My work essentially develops from my visual diary of drawings, photographs and recollections. I frequently draw inspiration from countless photos on my mobile phone – photos that are fleeting in nature but take on new meanings when they are manipulated with charcoal or paint. My emotive response to these photos, which typically reflect my lived experience, are sometimes combined and spliced. This creates new meanings which eventually inform my initial drawing practice and dictates the use of other materials, ultimately creating a contemplative quality to my work. Typically, I work in a considered, reflective style which is multi-layered and takes some time to complete, whether it is a drawing or mixed-media painting, a portrait or a landscape – this layered process allows for several contemplative changes and stages before I am finally happy to let the work speak for itself.
